Set a reverse DNS record
Why the forward record has to exist first, and where to set the pointer.
Last updated 1 August 2026
A reverse DNS record maps an IP address back to a hostname. Receiving mail servers and some logging tools check it.
Order of operations
- Create a forward record: mail.example.com pointing at the address.
- Wait for that record to resolve.
- Set the reverse record on the Network tab of the service to the same hostname.
Reverse DNS is not deliverability
It is one signal among several. SPF, DKIM and the sending reputation of the address matter more. Was this page useful?
